About Us

our story

It began as an informal conversation with a few like-minded nonprofit professionals sharing a coffee. We discussed issues like succession planning, volunteer burnout, policy and funding budgets, and we wanted to be connected.

Maybe we were idealists and too young to know if we could really make difference…Maybe we were mavericks. A bit outside the box. But we believed in something:

  • That our sector could grow.

  • That together we could have an impact.

  • That together we could create a stronger future for the non-profit sector in Ontario.

Connect the Sector (CTS)  is a community of younger professionals, connecting across generations, with the common goals of learning from each other. We collaborate to shape the future of the nonprofit sector.

Since 2012, CTS has hosted dozens of public panels, discussions, working sessions, workshops, and networking events. We're drawing hundreds of nonprofit professionals together. We have an established steering committee, and operate formally as an incubated project of the Ontario Nonprofit Network (ONN). This year we are focused on intergenerational policy dialogue.

CTS is a space where the many voices in our sector – volunteers, employees at all stages and levels, activists, social entrepreneurs, civil servants, policy wonks and sector champions – all collaborate for systems change through thoughtful knowledge exchange.Younger and older non-profit professionals come together to share ideas, understand each other, and together are shaping the future of the non-profit sector.

now is the time.

It’s time to take action for a stronger non-profit sector.

It’s time to build relationships and shape the future together.

To create a new future, we need a new approach. This conversation has created a movement.

About The Ontario Nonprofit Network

As a 7,000-strong network, with a volunteer base of 300 sector leaders, the Ontario Nonprofit Network (ONN) brings the diverse voices of the sector to government, funders and the business sector to create and influence systemic change. ONN activates its volunteer base and the network to develop and analyze policy, and work on strategic issues through its working groups, engagement of nonprofits and charities and government. ONN convenes the approximately 55,000 nonprofit and charitable organizations across the province.

ONN Working Groups

ONN gets things done working with volunteer leaders who focus on how to address specific issues or opportunities for Ontario nonprofits in various sectors. These action-focused groups identify methods and solutions that will strengthen the nonprofit sector. It is within these working groups that Fellows have the opportunity to contribute.
